Q - How cool was it to work in the movie business and working with Jack Nicholson. Any funny stories about behind the scenes of working on a movie?
I was 17 when we did that movie. That would make Jack Nicholson 29 at the time. I was given the assignment of teaching Jack enough guitar so he could fake his way through the band segments. (Jack played guitar in a band in that movie.)
So we sat down backstage at the old Cheetah Club in Venice (long since torn down) and I commenced-to teachin'. Jack was NOT an enthusiastic learner of the guitar. If you can imagine in his usual drawl "Damn, isn't there some kind of short cut to learnin' this crap?" That's what EVERybody wants is a short cut!
You'll have to see for yourself if he faked it well enough.
The only other insight into my small part in that movie was 1) who in the hell cut my hair? and 2) I got tired of using that cruddy Vox guitar* halfway through shooting - so I switched to my Telecaster. That's why the stage shot has me playing two guitars on the same song. I guess the 'continuity expert' didn't catch it!
*we had a sponsorship. I sold the guitar to our vocal coach for $25. No kidding.
shaw: I wonder if Zap is around.I found a guitar someone was throwing out and it has Zapp on the headstock. Turns out its one of those Law Suit era Les Pauls. I'm putting it back together it was only the body & neck, with no hardware but I got all the parts now.
