Call me weird...but I believe in payola. I think that good recordings need a chance to be heard...and that, given the opportunity, the cream WILL rise.
Why not pay money to get your song played? If the song is good, it'll catch on...or, at least, it'll stand a chance if it's heard. I've never called a radio station to request a tune, but I'm sure millions of others have.
I wouldn't have had a #1 record at the age of 18 were it not for payola. ONE guy got paid to play our song ONE time. ONCE. Three months later it was #1 on the BillBoard chart. It just needed to be heard by millions. It cost $5,000 (1967 dollars).
Payola is GOOD. Having a great record that you can't get played on the radio is BAD!
