I figured out that I probably practiced 3 hours every day starting around 1964, added in a few gigs, the SAC experience...by the time I'd joined Skynyrd in late '72 I'd logged around 8,700 hours.
The definition of LUCK : When preparation meets opportunity.

Q - Ed, which guitar has been in your possession the longest? My '62 SG I've had since '70 and the ALABAMA Strat since '72. There are TWO guys in South Jersey that have two of my old black Strats. *( *Note - Ed did eventually recover his 1959 Gibson Les Paul stolen at the same time. View the story here.)

Q - Did you every play bass live with LS before LW came back?? If so, with what equipment?
I did quite a few club dates and some shows with Skynyrd as a bass player. Funny that NO PHOTOS exist that can prove this*. I joined the band 11/72 and Leon didn't return until at least May '73. At first I used a Rickenbacker bass that I soon traded straight-up for a '65 Jazz Bass. Played thru an Ampeg SVT Eight ten-inch speakers.
* Actually, there is ONE, but you can hardly see him
Yup...that;s the ONLY photo of me playing bass w/ the band. The Cellar Door in Charlotte, NC...where we used to throw ciggy butts at the dancers on the floor right in front of the stage.

Q - What did you do for guitar repairs?
In the 70s, if we had a problem on the road we'd just have to live with it until we got to Atlanta or Jax. I remember one time taking my guitar to a shop in Denver because of some severe fret buzz. Sometimes at a gig, a road crew member from another band might be able to help. On the road, you just lived day-to-day. Allen & Gary swore by their favorite guy, Jay Rhine, in Atlanta. He was REAL GOOD and ALWAYS ridiculously busy. He took care of most of our repairs.
