Skynyrd actually had more good original material than most Southern bands. And we weren't as accomplished musicians as the Allmans, so jamming was out of the question.
We were more interested in how many songs we could play in 25 minutes. The Allmans wanted to play ONE song with multiple solos for 25 minutes. Thankfully, we were unable to do that. FREEBIRD took us where we needed to go and 9 minutes was long enough! (After I left the band in '75, they even made it LONGER by adding a second build-up which I thought was unnecessary...)
The Allmans thought we were total crap...not fit to be a pimple on their ass. One time we played Macon (around 1974). Three of them showed up...sat on the front row. Left 2 minutes into WORKIN' FOR MCA.
Ronnie always used to say that it was GREGG ALLMAN who ripped HIM off! (...copied his style, he meant.)

Q - Atlanta Jam somewhere around June 1st in '74...did Skynyrd play only one day/one set? Were you there to catch the ABB?
I think that's the day the Brothers played about 15 minutes and Gregg passed out! So they took a LONG break and came back. 80,000 people as I recall. We BURNED!
No, I didn't stay. Me, Ronnie, and Robert Nix of the Atlanta Rhythm Section were driving around Atlanta in Robert's T-bird trying to find some drugs!! BUSY. (Not exactly PROUD of my behavior back then, but it was what it was.)
