Q - Was anyone in the band a prankster or did you guys pull pranks on each other a lot?
No. But right after I joined the band they had me pull a good one on Jeff Carlisi.
Jeff's a talented artist and he was doing some caricatures. Ronnie asked me to go take a look at what he'd drawn, then he wanted me to act REALLY offended and mad.
Jeff was in the next hotel room over from mine, so I went over and had a look. He'd drawn all the band members...when I got to the drawing of me, I lost my mind & went nuts! I mean angry big time. Almost on par with the trick Joe Pesci pulls on Ray Liotta in GOODFELLAS. Really had Jeff going.
Everybody got a good laugh out of that...but we really stretched it for all it was worth. Really took Carlisi for a ride.
One time we had a little birthday party in a hotel room in Atlanta. Everybody was having a fine time when, for no apparent reason, our sound man Kevin Elson picked up a full ashtray and dumped it on Ronnie's head. The party quickly turned to pandemonium as Ronnie jumped Kevin ... several of us tried to pull him off, but it couldn't be done. I don't believe Kevin got hurt too bad. It looked a whole lot worse than it was.
In our nightclub days, we used to throw lit cigarettes at the dancers. Once in a while, if your aim was good, you'd get one to land in someone's hair. THAT's why we did it. Incorrigible!

We found this in an old stack of photos. September, 1995...Clair Bros rehearsal hall over in East Nashville. It's Skynyrd tradition...if it's your birthday, you get a pie (in this case, three) in the face. Me and Rossington in better days. That's Mike Estes trying to get a dab of whipped cream off my chin. Those were REAL banana cream & blackberry pies. Yeah, Gary looks GREAT in a smile. RARE! And it was Rossington who threw at least two of those pies. Q - Did Ronnie ever get the birthday pie in the face treatment?I was around for 3 of his birthdays. I can't recall ever doing the pie thing with Ronnie. I seem to recall on one of his birthdays, at a party in his hotel room in Atlanta, Kevin Elson dumped a FULL ASHTRAY on his head. The vibe in that room changed in an instant. No one could pull Ronnie off of Kevin, though I don't think he was hurt too badly.

Back in '91 Marshall started making miniature amps...I mean a 9-inch cube. One time after Gary recorded a solo, he went back into the amp room, moved his BIG amp out of the room and set the big boom stand with the mic in front of the mini Marshall. Then he called Billy in to listen to the track and showed him what he used to record it. Billy bought into it! He bragged about that little amp for MONTHS.
