Smashing Pumpkins ringleader Billy Corgan is continuing his own version of a shock-and-awe campaign in 2010. On the heels of unveiling plans for a massive multiyear "sprawling album" project called 'Teargarden by Kaleidyscope,' it appears Corgan will now also be releasing albums by other artists as well.
Smashing Pumpkins producer Kerry "Studio Dog" Brown write on his Glittercop blog: "Billy and I are happy to announce the birth of our record label! ... We are very excited to be working with amazing artists that have made a huge impact on the underground music world."
Perhaps taking a cue from his sometimes-conspirator Courtney Love, who is currently battling for rights to use the name Hole, Corgan will not announce the name of his new label until all the T's have been crossed and all the I's dotted. In the meantime, according to Brown's blog, the label plans to release albums from the following bands this year: The Germs, Fancy Space People, the Electric Prunes, the Strawberry Alarm Clock, YaHoWha 13 and Corgan' side-project, Starchildren.
With what appears to be a semi-traditional boutique label at his command, it looks as if Corgan plans to release these records in a semi-traditional format as opposed to 'Teargarden by Kaleidyscope,' which Corgan told Spinner the Pumpkins plan to release one track at a time, for free, online. The 44 tracks will also be bundled in 11 four-song EPs which will also be released one at a time, over the next few years.
"I think it's going to take awhile for the record business to find its new bearings," Corgan told Spinner last fall. Looks like he just got tired of waiting.
